I would like to extend an official welcome to Hillcrest Elementary School!! I am excited to be back at Hillcrest for another year. The staff, students and community were fantastic to work with the past three years and I am eager to come together again to continue making Hillcrest a great place to learn and grow. I am grateful for all of the custodial work that happened this summer to keep Hillcrest in top shape and for the office staff who have worked hard on the registration and school organization behind the scenes. The teaching staff and early childhood educators have been hard at it as well, planning for success. And the educational assistants have been planning for the students that they support. It’s a great team at Hillcrest!
September is often a very busy month, with sports teams and clubs starting up. Expect updates on Hillcrest’s website and through email about the School Community Pizza Party (September 17 5-6:30), where you’ll have a chance to meet and mingle with school staff, School Council meetings, pizza days, picture day (Oct 17) , Terry Fox and other events that you may choose to attend to help support Hillcrest in being the best that it can be. For students, being involved in school life is a very important element for success in school. It can support social aspects, confidence, self- esteem and independence. Hillcrest appreciates the support!
If you’re interested in volunteering at Hillcrest (trips, within the classroom, coaching, etc), we would love to have you! Please connect with the office so that we can help you in obtaining a vulnerable sector check (VSC). It’s important that we keep everyone safe. If you’re a returning volunteer and you completed the VSC last year, the process is easier this year. Please connect with the office as well and we will support.
To help ensure safety for all students, I kindly ask that parents say good- bye at the front doors or the fence at drop off. The playground and yard is for students only from 8:30- 3:15. I recognize that this can be tough for parents and students but once the students get playing, they are a-ok. We have a number of staff on the yard to help support well- being and safety. Please ensure that drop off happens AFTER 8:30 as we do not have supervision on the yard until that time. The fire lane at the front of the school is the pick- up/drop- off zone. If you are picking up your child and wish to leave your vehicle, please park outside this zone in a parking spot. The parking and fire lane can become quite congested. If this is the case, please park on the south side of 8th street west to wait.
There are some days to look forward to this month. Due to popular demand, comfy cozy Mondays will return as will Spirit Gear (school clothing/colors) Fridays. September 9th is FASD awareness day which will be recognized by wearing red and September 30 is National Truth and Reconciliation Day, which we will recognize by wearing orange.
And finally, thank you for the warm welcome backs, stopping in to say hello and all of the kindness that has flowed into the school. Always working together to be better. Your partners in education,
Sue and Eric
