As I mentioned in April, we often refer to April, May and June as one month and as the fastest month of the year.  And here we are in the middle of AprilMayJune.  Sometimes, May can be a tricky month- students get excited as the warmer weather approaches.  For our grade 8s, this can also be a time of unknown and uncertainty, wondering what high school is going to look like.  Fortunately, Hillcrest has a great team to support out grade 8 graduates in planning for high school with visits, tours and information.

In May, Hillcrest will be spreading mental health awareness through dance. During the week of May 6th to 10th Hillcrest's Mental Health Champions will coach the primary students with dance moves and choreography found in popular dances from the 1980s to the present day. This is Hillcrest's first Dance Week! Dance is a great way to get students up and moving and to reinforce the connection between healthy bodies and minds.

Students will then be able to use their new skills in a culminating Dance-a-thon on May 17th.  On May 6th students will receive an envelope, a pledge form, and a permission form which they can return by May 15th for the opportunity to participate in the Friday's Dance-a-thon. Hillcrest will be using any funds raised for updates to our primary and junior gym equipment, including new posts for the junior volleyball nets, updated primary gym floor hockey equipment, and much more. Students with submitted permission forms will receive a glow bracelet for the dance. The top three fundraising students will receive a gift card of $100 value (first place), $50 value (second place), and $50 value (3rd place). The top fundraising class will receive a pizza party.  We’re all excited to get moving and shaking at Hillcrest!

In an effort to further support athletics, please ensure that your child has athletic shoes.  Crocs are great but not the most supportive for gym.  We want to ensure safety for all students.  If you require any support with this, please contact the school.

Hillcrest’s third Wicked Wow Wednesday was a hit again.  The school swam in rainbows for Earth Day recognition and there was some epic mixing and matching of stripes, polka dots and patterns.  Hillcrest’s next Wicked Wow Wednesday falls on May 29th.  To support the dance- a- thon, students are encouraged to dress “80s Rock.” The fan favorite of “Comfie Cozy Day” will be every Monday and will continue to coincide with pizza day.  FriYAY Funnies will continue as will Hillcrest Pride Fridays (wear your school gear/school colors).  Popcorn Friday will carry on as well.  Please remember the Fundsrip fundraiser that is going on all year.  It is a gift card fundraiser.   Hillcrest is a happening place!

Always working together to be better.  Your partners in education,

Sue and Mylene
