September was an amazing month at Hillcrest. We’ve had so many great things happening. Congratulations must be extended to those who sold chocolate bars to raise money for yard improvements. We’re still finalizing amounts but it was definitely a successful fundraiser. Amazing! Our first big improvement to the yard will be to purchase and install a communication board, helping the yard to be more accessible for all
Thank you for joining us for the Meet and Greet Pizza Party. It was a record number of attendees and we all enjoyed meeting our student’s caregivers and families. Ongoing communication between the school and home is critical for student success. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions. Interviews will be coming up during the evening of November 19 and morning of the 20th.
The cross-country races were exciting to watch. It was awesome to see a junior and intermediate return to Harrison Park, giving a true cross country race feel. Students were able to engage in a variety of ways, through running, walking and skipping too. Way to go, Huskies! The top runners from each category in the primary, junior and intermediate grades will be attending the cross country meet later this month. Congratulations to everyone for participating.
Academically, Hillcrest has been chosen to be a priority school for math coaching. This is an exciting opportunity for everyone at Hillcrest. We will have math coaches coming in, generally once/week, with some coaches coming once or twice a month. It’s a great time to be a learner! EQAO results will be coming home soon for those who wrote last year and we’re excited to share that Hillcrest is on the move upwards. There were some significant improvements in reading and writing, which is cause for great celebration.
Learnings connected to Truth and Reconciliation occurred daily during most of September. Students recognized the day on September 30 at school by wearing orange. And the school was full of that vibrant, meaningful color! The conversations and immersive learning showed strong understanding of the importance of this day.
Early October is occasionally a time when schools see a reorganization of the school. I am happy and excited to say that the students will not be impacted by a reorganization.
Do you have a child born in 2023? Hillcrest’s Kindergarten registration event will be held on Wednesday October 21 from 3:30- 5:30. Come on in to do a meet and greet, take a tour and have your child registered for the 2027- 2028 school year. We look forward to meeting the newest members to the Husky team!
There is much to look forward to this month. Mondays will always be comfy-cozy day and pizza day. Husky Pride will fall on Fridays. Thanksgiving is on the 12th, picture day falls on October 26th and a PD is on October 16. October 31 will be orange and black day. Costumes are welcome as well but no masks or toy weapons please.
